robot, n.-a device that automatically performs complicated often repetitive tasks

I quite liked this week's topic, so much so that I was able to come up with an idea and execute it all in the same day-before Thursday. (yay!)
I decided to stray away from the android/humanistic version of a robot. For some reason, I've had strange creatures on the brain; octopi being one of them. I decided it would be fun to do a robotic version of an octopus. But what would it be doing? There's so many arms... a chef, a dog walker? Then it hit me: what about an underwater gardener? Bingo!
I like this guy very much. I've not returned to my usual style of illustrating (in case you have noticed.) I'm trying to figure out how to balance my newer tendencies with my older style. (Maybe I'll just have two styles?)
*Oh, and I'll update my last I-Fri post with my submission for 'spotted' in color soon!

  2. You don't think this style would work well for childrens illustration? Am I missing something? I think it's a great style for the children's market. These are my favorite pieces that you have been showing most recently.
    Great "robot"!

  9. Mm... an robot-octopus that harvests seaflowers. I wondered how you made the connection from robot to octopus to underwater gardener. LOL! Absolutely nothing wrong with that. I'm just curious what's your thinking process. I'm sure it's a reflection of your creativity. :)

  10. This is a wonderful illustration. I love the robot with his many arms but I also love the textures in the background. Is this created on traditional watercolor paper or some other paper (like rice paper?)

  11. What a really dellightful way to interpret the topic! It's fun to see robotic creatures that aren't humanoid, and I love the idea of the underwater gardener! I think this would be tremendously appealing to a child:>

  13. Thanks for the responses, guys! Wee -This is on canvas paper. I texturized it using gesso. I've been playing around with gesso, and have found a great variety of surfaces.
jaimie- It's done in acrylic, with a little wash, and ink.
librarian - I'm not sure how I got here either! I was doodling different robots, trying to go for an "organic" feel. (ironic, isn't it?)I started looping lines, and then that made me think of an octopus. I wondered...well, what would a robot be doing with that many arms? Many things came to mind, but the one that held the most appeal to me was picking flowers. :)
