Under the Sea

(I am on FIRE! Three posts in one day- whew!)
The theme for this week's Illustration Friday topic struck me as a little odd. I mean, it seems like we had the topic of "Sea" not that long ago. The similarity in topics was a little discouraging. Plus, I posted an image last week that featured a creature under the sea! Despite that, I decided to go ahead an post my squid triptych. This little guy was in my sketch book last week, and I knew I wanted to paint him in a fun way, so I broke him up into three separate pieces.
Then I decided on my color palette- a nice contrast of cools and warms.
I began the underpainting with yellow, to give the guy a little warmth.
I added some orange to give it a little body.
I deepened the contrast with a red-orange and added a few bubbles for background. (Do you see a hint of a nose? Odd, huh?)
Finally, I gave him some eyes, and topped it off with some light blue swirls to make it more dynamic and add a suggestion of movement.
Here he is in all of his glory.

  9. What a great way to display this piece, the dividing into thirds really makes him look like he is swimming in and out. Love the color combinations... (I thought the word "sea" was just a topic not to long ago too, very strange)
