So this week's topic is the exact kind I have a hard time being able to produce anything for. I was a little annoyed when I first saw it, honestly. But then I said to myself, "What if this were a job from a publishing house? Would you be annoyed then? Of course not! You would do your best to accomplish something worthwhile!" (You talk to yourself, too. Admit it!)
To work I went. Honestly, I'm not like some people who can transform the first thing that pops into their head into a great illustration. I have to get all of the "obvious" ideas out of the way, then something fun and original will turn up. I have to dig for a while.
The first things out of the gate were a girl walking in a winter forest; a granny (blue-hair), blue moon, and several things flying "into the blue." (I even toyed with the idea of using a Texas favorite, Blue Bell Ice Cream. I may still do something with it, but not for this post.)
Anyway, we happened to be eating a lot of different pies and cobblers this past holiday, including blueberry. I was in heaven, and needless to say, I made a pig out of myself! I decided to doodle some pictures of my favorite porker, and here we go!
Here we see Pig enjoying the beginning of what looks to be a feast of blueberry pies. Later on we see Pig feeling rather blue, due to his overindulgance. (Please note the blueberry stains covering Pig's clothes. Bad Pig!)
love this! adorable.

Oh, Dee, this is wonderful. And just now during the holiday season I can just FEEL for this sweet little guy!
ReplyDeleteThese are wonderful! I love the pig's stubby body and his little hooves, and that wonderful piggy expression on his face as he devours the pies (I adore blueberry pie:>). The second illo really captures the feeling that he ate a bit too much... Lovely watercolor technique!

ReplyDeleteAlexa, I don't illustrate children's books, but it's my dream! I'm hoping to start small with magazines and other publications first. :) Jules, you're so right! I can't believe I forgot that!
Tricia, I don't know that Christmas will be white, but I think it will definitely be COLD.
I'm a children's book illustrator, and I think you could do it for sure. Keep at it! I love your illustration for blue and your banner is marvelous too.
