Big Mouth

Some people...okay most people who know me would probably say I'm a big-mouth. Not in that "Oh man, she can't keep a secret!" kind of way. More like, "Holy Moly, once she gets rolling, she sure can talk!" way.

Monday night was my SCBWI monthly meeting. It was a little more low-key this month because we didn't have a speaker. Rather, we went over the do's and don'ts of submitting to publishing houses and a few other things learned at our recent Editor's Day.

I love going to these meetings and getting to connect with like-minded people. I always feel recharged afterward. I met a few new people Monday night, and that's always nice. I did notice, though that during the meeting, there were about three of us doing most of the talking. Mostly it was because we were the only members present who had been at Editor's Day, but also I think we've been involved in this industry long enough to have gathered some very useful information. I found myself just talking and talking and talking. One thing someone said would trigger all kinds of others things and I blabbed away.

Part of this is because I feel like we in SCBWI are here to help each other out. (That's what I love about it, it's so supportive and non-competitive.) These were things people (especially newbies) needed to know. The other part I think is what made me become a teacher in the first place: I had all of this knowledge, and someone had to benefit from it besides just me.

So I think having a big mouth is not necessarily a bad thing sometimes. What do you think? Do you find yourself becoming a big-mouth in certain situations?

  1. I wish I was a big mouth! Ha-ha! It's actually something I'm working on, trying to pipe up more in group situations. I really admire it! I think it's a great quality to have! Sharing information is a really wonderful thing. Send some of those talkative tendencies, my way!

I say they're lucky to have you!
I guess we're all a big mouth when it comes to the stuff we know well, and hopefully it benefits others...
