Before and After

I have decided that this is the year that I'm going to buckle down and get serious about being an illustrator. Despite my whining and lack of recent posting, I am serious about this being my career. (The fact is, I'm lucky enough to have the supportive spouse and home situation that allows for me to chase this particular dream. It's criminal to not appreciate and take advantage of it.)
Anyway, one of the things I'm doing to advance myself is to attend the Austin SCBWI's Fall Conference. Now, I've attended conferences before. What will be different this time is the fact that I will have my portfolio reviewed. (*gulp*) In preparation for this nail-biting, ego-busting event, I am revamping large sections of my portfolio. It's honestly not up to par, especially since it seems I have some new approaches creeping into my art. I'm doing my best to unify the whole thing. One of the ways I am doing this is to redo some of my favorite pieces. I still adore the ideas in many of these pieces, but the execution leave something to be desired. The piece above, "Float" was orginally an Illustration Friday submission. I have taken the basic premise and stylized it, so it looks more like it could be part of a story book. I know I've done well when I can still laugh at the new piece. Tell me what you think.

  1. I love the new piece. The colors and composition are just lovely. I actually wonder how the book will be after you turn it into a story!

    Bon courage girl!

  2. the new version rocks! it's got lots of depth, plus i love the addition of the bird. the feeling of the 2nd piece is a little different than the first, isn't it? in the first illo, the froggies seem more freaked out and frustrated, which is a big part of what i loved about it. but really, i love them both. best of luck at the conference - you'll do great!
