Well the weather outside is frightful...

So remember me complaining about how it was eighty-something on Saturday? Well, the last three days we've been under a "Winter Storm Weather Watch." We've had sleet, iced roads and had to start school two hours late yesterday. (Sidenote: If we could start at that time everyday, I'd be a much more patient teacher.)

Look! We even got a couple of inches of snow! Unfortunately, most of our outdoor plants are now dead. Poor babies aren't used to this kind of weather. I hope they come back in the Spring.

Anyway, Tuesday was my birthday and I had to say good-bye to my Children's Illustration class. It wasn't too sad, though. A bunch of us have already signed up for the weekend class in March. What was really good about it, was Mark discussed all kinds of marketing ideas and publications to consider. We did a lot more talking than painting, but I left with a really good feeling.
In fact, I have all kinds of scribbles down in my sketchbook for illustrations to do. I can see how my pictures are slowly evolving. I can also see that I have a major hurdle to jump over with refining my style. I have an issue with my paint technique. I want to work with acrylics, because I like how bright the colors are. I also like knowing that I can cover up any mistakes. However, the techniques I've been using most of the time, look like watercolor. It's really watered down acrylics. It was suggested to me that I use the watercolor technique because of the amount of detail in my illustrations. So that's what I've been doing. I'm going to be playing around with the two techniques over the holidays, and see what happens.
I'm also full of ideas for art that's not children's illustration. I've been looking at a lot of mixed media art, and I think it's inspired me. I've got sketches and doodles for collage style paintings that I really want to do. More like have to do. I've got these images that will not go away. They're kinda whimsical, fun. Anyway, I'm going to experiment with these over the weekend, and over the holidays. I'll post pictures when I'm through, and you can see the results for yourselves. :)
I've got more to talk about, but I'll post again.
(P.s.- How many of you are creating holiday cards? I think I want to do one...Have you guys found a really good quality/quick place to print them? Online even?)

  1. i would like to learn about printing my own cards, too. (i have an inkjet, and assume any cards made using it...would run if they got wet.)

it's too late this year, but next year i'd love to send people personally designed cards.
