Jack and the Beanstalk

Here is the rough sketch I created in my Children's Illustration class last week. I couldn't come up with a story I wanted to illustrate, so I used Mark's suggestion of using a public domain story. He frequeNtly discusses how we can take a well-known story and make it our own. Case in point, I've turned Jack into a "an Illinois farm boy", as Mark said. I like him.

Here he is walking Milky White to the market, so he can sell her. (Can you tell by her expression what she is thinking?) In the distance is a stranger. Hmm....what will happen?

I"m so tickled with this sketch and I'm working hard today to get the underpainting on it finished. My last class is Tuesday (My birthday!) and I'm more than a little sad. Despite having to drive three hours every Tuesday, I was really enjoying being able to talk shop every week with a group of people who GOT IT!

Oh well. Mark says that he'll possibly be teaching a weekend class next semester. Needless to say, I am so going to enroll.

I met the your teacher at the Austin conference. How lucky you've been to be learning from him!

  2. And don't I know it! He's like a bottomless well of knowledge, and I can't get enough! *sigh* I really hope that he does another class next semester.
